Attention USD Alumni: Join the San Diego Torero Takeover on June 9

Torero Takeover 2018A guided tour of the beautiful USD campus is one of 22 events happening June 9 in San Diego County. The 2018 Torero Takeover are special events open to USD alumni, family and friends.

What are your plans on Saturday, June 9, local University of San Diego alumni? How about getting together with fellow Toreros at one or more of the 23 events planned throughout the day between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.? It’s time for the second annual Torero Takeover!

Pacific Beach, Linda Vista, Point Loma, Carmel Valley, Escondido, Encinitas, Miramar, 4S Ranch, Chula Vista and more will host events that are open to the 25,000 USD alumni living in San Diego County. Social, educational and physical activities, many of which are connected to alumni-owned businesses and alumni-run organizations will make for a fun time for all.

The Torero Takeover is a great way for USD alumni to build participation in Leading Change: The Campaign for USD. For just $10, alumni can sign up for one or more events and you’ll receive a commemorative T-shirt to wear. Register for Torero Takeover events here.

Children's Museum Visit, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Escondido: Calling all North County parents! Did you know that the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido is run by fellow USD alumnus, Javier Guerrero? Javier will open the museum early for fellow Toreros and families. Includes admission for the day, breakfast, and USD t-shirt. 

Alcalá Park Tour: What's Happening at USD, 8:30-10 a.m., Meet at Degheri Alumni Center: The Princeton Review says USD is America’s most beautiful campus. Join us for a casual hike to see why! You’ll hear about the Torero Renaissance Plan and other ambitious goals for our alma mater’s future from our fantastic tour guide, Melissa Plaskonos, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management. Space is limited. Volunteer event lead is Maureen Holman ’85. Includes breakfast and a USD t-shirt.

Body and Mind Bootcamp, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Encinitas: Join Sheri (Matthews) Kimmel '03, alumni lululemon Ambassador and Corporate Wellness Consultant to jump start the day for a 30-minute (all-level body weight) workout to get your blood flowing and fun pumping. Afterward, we'll have a short session on goal setting to put your 2018 intention into action. This event will be held at the lifestyle brand store Vuori which is owned by USD alumnus, Joe Kudla '00. Bring a workout or yoga mat and comfortable clothes to move.

Waterfront Yoga, 9-11 a.m., Mission Bay: Join fellow alumni, friends, and families for a morning yoga session overlooking the beautiful waters of Mission Bay. This yoga class will be held at the Dana on Mission Bay which is part of the Bartell Hotels family of properties. Bartell Hotels is owned by USD alumnus, Richard Bartell '75 JD who is also on USD's Board of Trustees.

Coffee Talk in San Marcos, 9-11 a.m.: Join fellow alumni in the San Marcos! Is there a better way to start your morning than by having a cup of joe at alumni-owned Ryan Brothers Coffee? We think not! Bring the kids, because we'll have poster boards and markers out for them to write thank you notes to our alumni police and peace officers. That's right — some of San Diego's finest are USD alumni. Includes a cup of coffee and the best Torero Takeover shirt around!

Mission San Diego de Alcala Tour, 9-10:30 a.m., Mission Valley: Be a tourist in your own city! Join fellow USD alumni and families to tour the beautiful Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá. San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the 21 great California Missions, marks the birthplace of Christianity in the west coast of the United States. Included: tour, donuts, coffee, and a Torero Takeover shirt for you and each of your guests to don throughout the day. 

Tiny Toreros Playdate, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., UTC: Do you have a tiny Torero? Come join us at the Nobel Athletic Fields and Recreation Center. Diego Torero and the USD cheer squad will be making appearances to take pictures with kids young and old. Includes kid-friendly snacks and USD t-shirts for registered participants. Volunteer captain is Erin Gunning '05. 

Living Coast Discovery Center Tour, 10 a.m.-noon, Chula Vista: Join USD alumni at this environmental education center with marine animal and bird exhibits located in the Sweetwater Marsh Unit of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. Living Coast Discovery Center is dedicated to providing environmental education on coastal resource conservation, and instilling a respect for nature and wildlife in people of all ages. Included is an admission ticket, access to the hiking trail, snacks and USD t-shirt.

RUSH Spin Class, 10:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Carmel Valley: Show your stuff and get down to business at RUSH Carmel Valley with spin instructor Crystal (Peterson) Johnston '10. Space is limited for this USD alumni class. Beginners welcome! Includes your bike reservation, shoe rentals, towel, and a USD t-shirt to wear after class for a fun Torero photo op!

Kegs and Eggs at the Comber, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Mission Beach: The Beachcomber is an INSTITUTION for Toreros! Hang with fellow alumni for Sara's breakfast burritos and a beer and reminisce about the good 'ole days. Included: burritos, a beer, and the best USD t-shirt around.

Sparks Gallery Tour and Lunch, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Downtown: The Sparks Gallery is housed within the historic Sterling Hardware Building in the Gaslamp Quarter. Sparks Gallery is an event space and represents contemporary artwork by artists living in San Diego and Southern California and is owned by USD alumna, Sonya Sparks '05, who launched the business in 2013. Included: a gallery tour with Sonya, light lunch, and a Torero Takeover t-shirt. Afterwards, head over to our event at You and Yours Distillery for a tour and a custom cocktail. 

San Diego Food Bank Service Hour, 12:30-2:30 p.m., Miramar: The San Diego Food Bank provides nutritious food to people in need, advocates for the hungry, and educates the public about hunger-related issues. Volunteer activities may include: Cleaning, inspecting, sorting, packing, and labeling food products. San Diego Food Bank CEO is Jim Floros '84. A light lunch and t-shirt will be provided for each registered attendee. Note that each registered attendee will be required to fill a waiver in advance to participate. Afterwards, pop by our event at Alesmith to meet other fellow Toreros for a pint and pizza. 

Ales at Alesmith, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Miramar: Founded in 1995, AleSmith Brewing Company is a San Diego-based artisanal craft brewery that specializes in handcrafted ales inspired by the European classics. Taste legendary craftsmanship for yourself. Alesmith is owned by USD alumnus Peter Hesse Zien '88 JD. This event is co-hosted by USD's Veteran Alumni Network. Stop by to see the tasting room, get your shirt, grab a pint and pizza with some of your favorite Toreros, and cheers our alumni veterans for their service to our country!

You and Yours Distillery Tour, 1:30-3:30 p.m., East Village: Owned by USD alumna, Laura Johnson '14, You and Yours is an urban distillery and tasting room offering gin and vodka. Stop by for a tour and a custom cocktail with Laura and cheer the success of this young alumna. Included: one cocktail for each registered guest over the age of 21 and USD t-shirt. 

Chicano Park Tour, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Barrio Logan: Join fellow USD alumni and beloved USD Ethnic Studies Professor, Dr. Alberto Pulido, to visit Chicano Park! Chicano Park is a 7.9-acre park located beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in Barrio Logan. The park is home to the country's largest collection of outdoor mural art as well as various sculptures, earthworks, and an architectural piece dedicated to the cultural heritage of the community. The tour includes: water, snacks, and a USD t-shirt.

Kensington Brewing Co. Happy Hour, 3-5 p.m., Kensington: There's something special about sitting down after a long day and enjoying a drink with friends. Kensington Brewing Company is a great place to do just that. When you're looking for a brewery in San Diego that offers unique flavors of craft beer in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, there's simply no better place to be. The brewery is family- and kid-friendly; so, while you're enjoying a delicious IPA, the little ones can enjoy some non-alcoholic fare. Kensington Brewing Co. is co-owned by USD alumnus, Zach Knipe '03. Included: a pint (age 21 and over), food, and a Torero Takeover t-shirt for all registered attendees. This event is sponsored by USE Credit Union.

Dirty Birds Happy Hour, 3-5 p.m., Pacific Beach: There are 900 alumni living in the 92109! Check out Dirty Birds, celebrate their 10th anniversary, and share some wings and drinks with your favorite fellow alumni. Dirty Birds is co-owned by Noli Zosa '95. Includes wings, 1 drink ticket and a USD t-shirt for each registered guest!

La Finquita Wine Tasting, 3-5 p.m., Ramona: We love supporting USD alumni-owned businesses, especially those with wine! Owned by Charlie '06 and Jess '07 Koehler, La Finquita offers great wines in a fun atmosphere. Charlie and Jess will share info about their wines and will offer Toreros a discount on wine purchases that day! Includes tastings and a USD t-shirt for each registered guest.

Happy Hour at Eppig Waterfront Biergarten, 5-7 p.m., Point Loma: With over 600 USD alumni living in Point Loma, it's no wonder that happy hour at Eppig Biergarten is such a hit! Join Gerry Rodrigues '97, president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, for a networking happy hour at Eppig Brewing Waterfront Biergarten, owned by USD alumna, Stephanie Eppig '07. Includes pizza, 1 drink ticket, and a USD t-shirt for each registered guest.

Lagers at Legacy Brewing, 4-6 p.m., Oceanside: Join fellow USD alumni, families, and friends to check out alumni-owned Legacy Brewing Company in Oceanside! Legacy is co-owned by Jennifer Snyder '91. Legacy Brewing has a European influence with a quality representation of old styles and hybrids of new. Included: one pint (for guests over 21), pizza, and a Torero blue t-shirt for each registered attendee. 

NA Pizza Night, 4-6 p.m., 4S Ranch: Napizza brings locally-sourced, nutritionally-delicious food to the tables of its fans, friends and family. It’s the only pizzeria in San Diego to be green certified by the Green Restaurant Association; it composts and recycles at all of its locations! All unsold pizza is donated to a local food bank that each location resides in. Want to know more? Come meet NA Pizza owner, Chris Antinucci '08, for a sampling of Napizza's best sellers and either a pint or handmade craft soda. Includes a Torero Takeover t-shirt for each registered attendee!

Alumni Standup at Comedy Palace, 6:30-8 p.m., Kearny Mesa: Join alumnus, Marc Yaffee '83 (Showtime and Comics Unleashed) plus 2 other comedians, for a night of laughs at the Comedy Palace. Included: your ticket for a 90-minute show plus a USD Torero Takeover t-shirt. Note: there is a two item (food or drink) minimum per person.
