Torero Athletics: Spring Sports All-Conference Honorees; Roundup

The 2017-18 season has come to a close for all University of San Diego Division I sports teams — save for men’s rowing team competing in the June 1-3 IRA National Championships and men’s tennis standout August Holmgren competing at the NCAA Individual Tournament in singles action May 23-28 at Wake Forest University. No. 60 Holmgren’s first match is against North Carolina’s William Blumberg at 8 a.m. Pacific on Wednesday.

This week’s Torero Athletics roundup provides the all-conference honorees among spring sport student-athletes, both for their competitiveness in their respective sports and their prowess academically in the classroom.

All-West Coast Conference First Team: August Holmgren, Men’s Tennis (singles), Holmgren-Joel Gamerov, Men’s Tennis (doubles); Taylor Spence, Softball.

All-WCC Second Team: Gui Osorio, Men’s Tennis (singles) and Osorio-Nico Borter, Men’s Tennis (doubles); Adam Kerner and Shane McGuire, Baseball.

WCC Honorable Mention: Chris Murphy, Baseball; Borter and Gamerov, Men’s Tennis (singles); Dalton Hankamer, Golf; Madison Casiano, Lindsay Clare, Delaney Heller and Kailey Hill, Softball; Nicole Anderson and Daniela Morales, Women’s Tennis (singles); Anderson-Morales, Women’s Tennis (doubles).

All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Second Team (Women’s Swim/Dive): Mackenna Briggs-Kailyn Evans-Danielle Taylor-Alex Hubel, 800 Freestyle Relay; Briggs, 500 Free; Hubel, 100 Butterfly; Taylor and Briggs, 200 Free; Evans, 100 Breaststroke; Briggs, 1,650 Free; Taylor, 100 Free; Hubel, 200 Butterfly; Briggs-Evans-Hubel-Taylor, 400 Free Relay.

Three Toreros Named NSCA All-Americans

Three USD student-athletes have been recognized as National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-Americans. The Torero trio consists of football’s defensive tackle Connor Spencer, senior setter Kristen Gengenbacher from women’s volleyball, and junior baseball pitcher Travis Kuhn. The student-athletes were nominated by Mark Lamoreaux, USD’s director of athletic performance, and Matt Couch, assistant director of athletic performance. These awards were announced in late April.
