The School of Leadership and Education Sciences’ Sustainability Committee is hosting a Sustainability Week Challenge this week, Feb. 12-16, that’s about awareness, providing useful tips and information and, of course, opportunities to take action.

The school on the west side of campus has already hosted a Meatless Monday event to share vegetarian options and explain the benefits of adopting this into one’s lifestyle. Food samples and recipes were on hand for the event on Monday.

On Tuesday, Nature Unplugged’s Sebastian Slovin offered tips, tricks and tools to help cultivate a practice of mindfulness and body awareness that can help develop sustainable habits, practices and well-being.

Wednesday saw SOLES’ determination to become the USD campus’ first Zero-Waste facility as it gave a tour that included a glimpse of its state-of-the-art rooftop solar panels and composting demonstration.

Thursday’s programming will be a Lunch and Learn event from noon to 1:15 p.m. in Mother Rosalie Hill Hall Room 127 that’s led by Arthur Atkinson, supervisor of USD’s Electronic Recycling Center. The center is located at 5330 Linda Vista Road, just down the hill from the west end of campus. Atkinson will speak about the e-waste center, what they can take and the importance of properly disposing e-waste. Lunch is provided. To RSVP, email solessustain@sandiego.edu

Throughout the week and concluding on Friday, all SOLES offices will get re-certified by the USD Green Office Certification Program, a USD and San Diego Gas and Electric joint project. The primary areas involved in certification consist of resource reduction and waste minimization.
