San Diego (March 20, 2017) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Dean Stephen C. Ferruolo announced today that Victor Fleischer has been named Director of USD School of Law Tax Programs. Fleischer will be assuming the position in July 2017, succeeding Professor Howard Abrams, who has accepted an offer to teach at Harvard Law School as a visiting professor in 2017-18.

Fleischer is internationally known for his scholarship in tax policy. Before joining the USD tax faculty in 2013, Fleischer taught in a tenured or visiting capacity at Columbia, UCLA, Georgetown, Illinois, Colorado, and NYU law schools. Fleischer also wrote a column about tax policy for the New York Times from 2013 to 2016.

In October 2016, Fleischer was appointed Democratic Chief Tax Counsel of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

As Director of Tax Programs, Fleischer will oversee USD School of Law’s nationally ranked JD and LLM programs, which have produced leading tax practitioners for more than forty years.

“Vic Fleischer is an outstanding tax teacher and scholar who also has had an influential role in shaping the discussion of tax policy and tax reform,” said Dean Stephen Ferruolo. “I am very pleased that he has agreed to direct our tax programs, as I know he will provide strong leadership in making sure that our tax faculty and programs remain among the very best in the country. I also want to thank Howard Abrams for directing our tax programs so capably for the past three years.”

“USD is a wonderful place to teach,” said Fleischer. “It’s been thrilling to watch our students launch into successful careers in law firms and accounting firms in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, New York, and across the country. Tax policy is on everyone’s mind this year in the government and private sector alike. It’s an exciting time for the USD programs.”
