Intersession is a Global Learning Experience for USD Students

The first three weeks of January at the University of San Diego, also known as Intersession, offers a wide range of opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students the chance to be in-person global learners, to experience a new culture, new sights, meet new people, try new food and make unforgettable memories and connections.

Just this month, USD School of Business graduate students traveled to places such as Mumbai, India, Munich, Germany, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Hong Kong, China. Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science's Master's Entry Program of Nursing (MEPN) students traveled to Mexico and India. School of Leadership and Education Sciences students did a nonprofits and civil society class in Guatemala. Graduate and undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences' international relations program explored Siem Reap, Cambodia, then Hong Kong, China and, finally, Seoul, South Korea.

Sophomore students, members of the Class of 2019, continued USD's tradition of participating in the Second-Year Experience Abroad program. Two separate trips, one based in Florence, Italy, the other in Auckland, New Zealand, provided them with an academic class and, accompanied by a cross-section of USD staff and administrators, an intercultural learning component.

Additional intersession study abroad programs, complete with both an academic course and opportunities for hands-on projects, exploring the city's culture and more, included business and Spanish language students in Buenos Aires, Argentina and chemistry students studying water quality in and around Mbarara, Uganda.

Each study abroad opportunity, whether it’s during intersession, summer or for a full semester, is a reflection on the International Center and its mission statement: The University of San Diego is committed to actively promoting awareness, appreciation, and respect for the complexity of cultural, political, environmental, and social issues worldwide while creating a campus environment that builds theoretical and practical skills needed to interact effectively in today's global society.
