Usd To Host Mexico Supreme Court Justice

SAN DIEGO, CA: On Friday, January 30, 2015, Justice in Mexico, part of the College of Arts & Sciences, will host Justice José Ramón Cossío Díaz, a presiding member of Mexico’s Supreme Court, for a public keynote address at the University of San Diego. The talk is co-sponsored by University of San Diego School of Law.

Justice Cossío has written widely on diverse topics including constitutional law, law and economics and moral theory. Before becoming a Supreme Court judge, he was a law professor and dean of the law school at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). A recipient of many awards, he has lectured at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the Universidad de Chile, the University of Michigan, and Yale and Stanford law schools, among others. At his public presentation at the University of San Diego, Justice Cossío will provide an overview of Mexico’s progress toward implementing this new criminal justice system and other issues related to the rule of law in Mexico. For those who care about achieving justice in Mexico, this is an event that should not be missed.

In recent years, Mexico’s federal government has been working to address major rule of law challenges. The cornerstone of these efforts is the country’s transition to a new criminal justice system that will take effect in 2016. This new system will rely on oral, adversarial trial procedures, which advocates believe will improve the efficiency, transparency, and fairness of the criminal justice system. The new system will raise the bar of expectations for prosecutors, strengthen the role of defense attorneys, and give judges greater oversight throughout the process. Moreover in the past years the country has approved reforms to the Constitution to open its legal framework to international standards while some issues are still highly criticized and debated by national and international organizations.

Justice in Mexico, a program based at the University of San Diego with support from the MacArthur Foundation and U.S. State Department, has been working for over a decade to analyze and advocate for rule of law reform in Mexico. Justice in Mexico generates cutting edge research, promotes informed dialogue, and works directly in the policy arena to achieve a more secure, just, and peaceful future for Mexico.

Justice Cossío has authored 21 books and has produced over 750 publications. At his public presentation at the University of San Diego, Justice Cossío will provide an overview of Mexico’s progress toward implementing this new criminal justice system and other relevant human rights reforms in one of Mexico’s most difficult times. The talk will take place in Spanish (with translation) in the Warren Auditorium of the School of Leadership and Education Studies on the University of San Diego campus at 10:30am-12:00pm on Friday, January 30, 2015.
