USD Showcases the Classroom of the Future

6th Annual Faculty Technology Open House

As the classroom of the 21st century continues to evolve, the University of San Diego will demonstrate the latest developments at the sixth annual Faculty Technology Open House on Friday, Feb. 17. The open house takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. in USD’s University Center Forums.

The event aims to engage and inspire faculty in their use of teaching technology and brings together USD’s information technology professionals and technology partners for an afternoon filled with information, including demonstrations, exhibits and presentations by faculty members and students.

Presenters include faculty members who will share about new products and techniques they have found to be useful in their teaching and research. A faculty group involved with an iPad classroom project will have an interactive session where they discuss how they have integrated the iPad into their curriculum. Students will also highlight their accomplishments and development of technology-based projects. 

Guest speaker, Amy Collier, associate director for Technology and Teaching at Stanford University, who has received national acclaim for her work with innovative learning space design in the classroom to create interactive, flexible learning spaces that can accommodate a wide variety of learning activities, will give a short talk followed by an interactive session.

“We are excited to demonstrate how innovative, cost-effective technologies can significantly improve teaching, learning and research for our students and faculty,” said Shahra Meshkaty, senior director of Academic Technology Services.

Other presentations will explore cloud computing, classroom video presentations and creation, and social media such as Facebook in higher education. New developments in the migration of the learning management system from WebCT to Blackboard, which augment over 1200 courses at USD annually and provides instructors with online connectivity to students outside of class hours for continued discussions, email, live chat, and class document sharing.

Vendors who will be exhibiting at this year’s open house include SMART, Tidebreak, Apple, USD Torero Store, Absolute Software, AMX, Datatel+SGHE, HP/Sarcom, AT&T,  EndNote, Echo 360, Southland Technology,  Adobe, Cisco Systems, ComputerLand, Blackboard,  Microsoft,  Qualtrics,  WolfVision,  i>clicker, Steelcase as well as the many support units within USD's Information Technology Services organization.
