Athletics Roundup: Women's Soccer Opens in North Carolina

Women's Soccer

The Wake Forest University Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., is where the fall sports season will begin for a USD team as the women’s soccer team plays Wake Forest on Friday, Aug. 19 at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific time) and then faces North Carolina State on Aug. 21 at 8:30 a.m.

The women’s team, directed by 14th-year head coach Ada Greenwood and a pair of former Torero standout players turned assistants in Leigh Ann (Robinson) Brown and Elie Magracia, looks to get off to a good start to the season.

The WCC preseason coaches’ poll released last week had USD tied with Portland for sixth place behind defending WCC champion BYU, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and San Francisco. One Torero senior, defender/midfielder Jacqueline Altschuld, was named to the All-WCC Preseason Women’s Soccer Team.

While the regular season is the team’s focus now, Torero players recently did some community building by hosting a youth soccer skills clinic at Linda Vista Elementary.

Men’s Soccer Hosts Exhibition, Golf Tournament

Their regular season doesn't start until Aug. 26 on the road, but the men’s soccer team will be busy this week. The Toreros will play a 7 p.m. exhibition game against Grand Canyon University on Thursday, Aug. 18 in Torero Stadium. Then, on Friday, the team will host its annual USD Men’s Soccer Golf Tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

The tournament is a program fundraiser, which enables the team an opportunity to do a trip such as the one it will do to the state of North Carolina to open the 2016 season. USD plays at Duke University on Aug. 26 and at Elon on Aug. 28.

Meet Torero Basketball Newcomers

The USD basketball season for men and women might be a few months away from actual games, but it’s a good time to get to know some of the new student-athletes who will be donning Torero uniforms later this year.

This week, learn more about men’s basketball newcomer Mark Carbone, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard, and on the women’s side, Madison Pollock, a 6-1 freshman guard.
