With everything from state-of-the-art drone prototypes to game-changing renewable energy systems, the inaugural Cal-Israel Innovation Expo and Conference at the University of San Diego delivered on its promise of being a wonderful showcase for next-generation technologies, both nationally and internationally.

Hosted by the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, the expo featured the latest and greatest products and services from more than three-dozen technology companies based in Israel and California. Attendees had a front-row seat to a host of innovative developments in medical, computer and cyber technologies, as well as energy, water conservation and agribusiness.

“We are honored to host this premiere event that showcases emerging technologies to power the future and foster global innovation, cross-cultural education, and professional development worldwide,” said Chell Roberts, dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering. “At USD, innovation is essential to our success, and this expo can only support that connection.”

According to event liaison and Israeli-born entrepreneur Yoram Dahan, the expo was created to connect Israeli start-ups and companies with students, faculty, investors, business leaders, strategic partners, and government delegations. Dahan was excited about the opportunities hosting at USD provided, and was hopeful the collaboration would continue well into the future.

“This event is about connection; connecting international business opportunities, connecting students with internship opportunities, connecting entrepreneurs with potential partnerships,” he said. “We encourage collaboration, and we’re very excited USD has provided us this opportunity to connect with this audience.”

Several notable speakers provided their perspective on the importance of cultivating long-term relationships between Israeli and California business communities, including San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Gary Jacobs, founder of Jacobs Investment Company LLC. Faulconer called the expo “the perfect opportunity for connecting innovators focused on building a better tomorrow. This expo is about synergies; partnerships.”

The expo also offered attendees the opportunity to meet the innovators and developers of new products, obtain critical information and guidance from strategic partners and community members in San Diego and Israel, and learn about job opportunities, internships and student exchange programs. Seminars and breakout sessions were led by a distinguished panel of speakers comprised of local business leaders, elected officials and USD faculty members.

“The expo is the first major conference in San Diego to bring together companies and governmental entities alike for the purpose of creating enduring relationships between California and Israeli business leaders,” Dahan said. “It really showcases the next generation of solutions.”
