Free USD Film Festivals Examine Social Justice, Culture

AA Film Festival

The University of San Diego is hosting two film festivals this week on campus and both offer their audience a chance to gain important societal perspective.

The 10th annual Border Film Week, which runs Feb. 23-25, is being hosted by the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies' Trans-Border Institute and it features documentaries and films that have been released both in the United States and/or Mexico and showcase stories of people and social justice issues.

The schedule for Border Film Week, where screenings will be shown for free but with limited seating in the IPJ Theatre, is:

Feb. 23: Run Up!, 2 p.m.; Si Supieras, 6 p.m., No Mas Bebes, 6:30 p.m.

Feb. 24: Tiempo Suspendido, 2 p.m.; Cartel Land, 6:30 p.m.

Feb. 25: Hotel de Paso, 2 p.m.; Llevate Mis Amores, 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the films, there are also a few video and art installations in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice's Rooms A, E and F. For more information on each film and the special exhibits, please go to www.sandiego.edu/borderfilmweek

African American Film Festival

An African American Film Festival is taking place Feb. 22-27 from 7-10 p.m. in Serra Hall, Room 204. This event, part of USD's Black History Month celebration, offers films that examine historical figures, pop culture and social issues. The movies are open to all and admission is free.

Here's the list of remaining films this week:

Feb. 23: "Shaft"

Feb. 24: "Do the Right Thing"

Feb. 25: "Malcolm X"

Feb. 26: "Bamboozled"

Feb. 27: "Dear White People"

The festival's first two films, on Feb. 21 and 22, were "The Jackie Robinson Story," and "Lillies of the Field," respectively.

The African American Film Festival is sponsored by the Black Student Resource Center, Black Student Union, Copley Library, the Department of English, the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Department of Ethnic Studies, the Humanities Center, the Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action and the United Front Multicultural Center.
