Incoming International Student Competes at Wimbledon
USD ATHLETICS — The University of San Diego women's tennis team eagerly awaits incoming freshman Sophia Chow for the 2015-16 season. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Chow gets set to compete at The Junior Championships, Wimbledon for the first time in her career beginning Monday, July 6 at the All England Club in London.The Brazilian, who boasts a career-high ITF (International Tennis Federation) ranking of No. 109, is sure to make her presence known next week on the grass. Chow defeated two, top-ranked opponents in the qualifying rounds to advance. In the first round, Chow defeated No. 69 Jessica Hinojosa Gomez of Mexico in a tough, three-set battle 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-3. Chow followed that match up with another thrilling victory, coming back from a set down against No. 84 Ludmilla Samsonova of Italy 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
"Wimbledon is amazing," Chow expressed. "I have never played on grass until now and it feels great. Luckily, I had a few days to adapt to the new surface, but I think it goes with the style of my game. Being at the All England Club is a great experience and has a great atmosphere. I have never been to a Grand Slam before - everything is new and incredible."
Chow is scheduled to face off against Jil Teichmann of Switzerland. Chow is also playing in the doubles draw with China's Yu Yuan.
