Toreros Turnaround Led to Championship Season
U-T San Diego -- Picked in July to win their second straight Pioneer Football League title despite losing 23 seniors and six assistant coaches, the USD Toreros started the 2012 season 2-3 and faced the prospect of a long, lost season in early October.
USD had just committed six turnovers (four interceptions, two fumbles) in a 38-10 blowout loss at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. That’s when head coach Ron Caragher called the team together for a gut-check meeting. He also met one-on-one with quarterback Mason Mills and discussed Mills’ decision making, basically telling his talented junior quarterback from Coronado that he didn’t have to win games on his own.
The result was an absolutely dominating 44-0 win over Campbell at USD on Oct. 13. The defense looked like the ‘76 Steelers. Mills did a great imitation of Tom Brady, hitting 19 of 20 passes for 217 yards. The win started a six-game winning streak that featured a vastly improved defense and offense and ended with a PFL title-clinching, 34-10 win over Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. last Saturday.
