Journey Highlights Toll of Drug War

U-T San Diego -- Divided by a steel fence demarcating the U.S.-Mexico border, two groups gathered Sunday — separated from each other, but united in purpose.

A coalition of activists, community members and families affected by the ongoing drug war in Mexico and the United States stood on both sides of the barrier to send off a string of cars, vans and buses headed to Washington, D.C., as part of Caravan for Peace. The journey began midday in San Diego and is scheduled to end exactly a month later after stopping in about two dozen cities.

The day ended with a vigil and forum at the University of San Diego and an evening rally with further testimonials at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. Today, the contingent will head to Los Angeles. (Full Story
