Helen McHugh, RSCJ, Professor of English, Passes Away
The University of San Diego community is saddened to learn of the passing of Sister Helen McHugh, RSCJ, on Dec. 30 at Oakwood, the Society of the Sacred Heart’s elder care center in Atherton, Calif.
An undergraduate alumna of San Francisco College for Women and graduate degrees (MA, PhD) from Stanford University — all in English, Sister McHugh arrived at the San Diego College for Women in 1965 as an English professor. She spent four decades at USD, serving as chair of the English and Fine Arts departments.
Named Professor Emerita in 1988, McHugh conducted her research and administered a tutoring program for low-income children. In 1998 she was honored with an International Education Award from the Japan Society of San Diego and Tijuana.
Her life will be celebrated in a Mass of Resurrection at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Oakwood Retirement Center, Atherton.
