Albert Einstein, himself a refugee of one of the greatest crimes against humanity in history, famously warned that we will not transcend our current problems without finding new ways of thinking about them. This has also been true of the history of human rights. Today we celebrate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly 63 years ago in San Francisco on Dec. 10, 1948, a milestone in the conceptual evolution of how all humans should be treated.
