Message from USD President: New Board of Trustees Members
Dear Campus Community,
At the May 6th Board of Trustees meeting, two of our distinguished alumni were elected as members of the board.
Michael B. Kaplan, owner of ARKA Properties Group, Inc., a residential property management and development company based in Beverly Hills, Calif., and James D. Power IV, managing director of the JDP Family Office in Westlake Village, Calif., have been elected to the board, effective July 1.
As longtime members of the USD family, both gentlemen have been involved with us for many years, first as students and later as professionals sharing their time and talents to help our university become an even more outstanding academic institution.
A 1972 alumnus of the USD School of Law, Mr. Kaplan is rejoining the board after leaving as a distinguished Trustee Emeritus in the 1990s. Since that time, Mr. Kaplan has served as a member of the School of Law’s Board of Visitors where he assisted with a successful capital campaign. Mr. Kaplan is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Children’s Nature Institute; Honorary Director, National Board of City of Hope; and a past member of the Shelter Partnership Board of Directors.
Mr. Kaplan and his wife, Theresa, have one son. The family lives in Beverly Hills, California.
James D. Power IV is a distinguished 1985 alumnus of USD. Recipient of the 2006 Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award by the College of Arts and Sciences, Power is a familiar figure on the Linda Vista campus. Mr. Power is currently an active member of the University’s Alumni Association Board of Directors where he has been involved with various committees and alumni strategic planning initiatives.
As an executive with the family-owned J.D. Power and Associates, Mr. Power served in various leadership positions including Chairman of J.D. Power Asia Pacific, Regional Director of the Michigan office, and managed the Canadian operations where he established the first office in Toronto in 1996.
Mr. Power, his wife Julie, and their three children, live in Westlake Village, California.
Additionally, four dedicated former USD trustees, Manuel Barba, MD, Patricia M. Howe, Margot A. Kyd and John M. Robbins, have been selected for Trustee Emeriti honors at the University.

Pat Howe’s service on the board spanned 38 years, following three years on the board of the San Diego College for Women (1969-72) before it merged with the University of San Diego in 1972. Ms. Howe, a career financial services professional, was a general partner of L.F. Rothschild, where she was the first woman partner of any major New York Stock Exchange firm in the country.
Margot Kyd served on the USD Board of Trustees for ten years during the course of her 30-year career in senior management with Sempra Energy.
