Please join the Music Department in welcoming its four student assistants this semester:  Roniya Yako (Music '20), Maya Ramirez (Anthropology '20), Kiera McNeill (Music '19) and Zia Yurchuck ('21).  Get to know Maya and Zia below:

Maya Ramírez is a second-year student at USD and is majoring in Anthropology. She was originally born in San Antonio, Texas, but grew up a little outside of Chicago in Darien, Illinois, so she says her A’s strangely and “y’all” is an integral part of her vocabulary. Back home she lives with her mom, Christina, and her chubby gray cat, Carla. Maya mostly likes to hang out with friends in her free time, but when she isn’t with them or studying, she’s probably doting over the cute dogs that pass through campus. She is also involved in many USD clubs, including MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán) and Border Angels. Maya doesn’t have a particular music genre she listens to exclusively, but her favorite artists include Frank Ocean, SZA, Local Natives, and Maluma among many others.

What profession or job do you envision yourself in 5 years from now?

In five years, I hope to be in graduate school on track towards my Master’s degree and still setting my sights on my PhD. I hope I’ll be engaged in fieldwork in whichever facet of Anthropology I decide to undertake by then, as well.

Name your favorite movie?

This is a toughie. I pretty much have three favorite movies: Mulan, Moulin Rouge, and The Fifth Element.

What is your favorite sport? My favorite sport to play is soccer, but that’s only if my teammates aren’t crazy competitive. My favorite sport to watch is basketball, but I pretty much exclusively watch Spurs games. I’m not an all-knowing fan, though, so don’t count on me knowing Kawhi’s stats or anything; I just know Tim Duncan is the MAN.

Zia Yurchuck

I am Zia Yurchuck. I am currently a freshman here at USD, and I already love it! I am from Atlanta, Georgia. I am the 3rd of four kids, and I am very close with my family. I have a passion for working with individuals with special needs, so I intend on studying Behavioral Neuroscience, so I can eventually become an Occupational Therapist. I am so excited to be a torero!

My favorite pet is my black pug, Mowgli! Follow him on Instagram @mowglithemanpug.
My favorite sport is competitive cheerleading. I have been cheering since I was 5 years old & I am actually a 2015 world champion!
My favorite song is Angel by Jack Johnson.
