SHAHEEN LECTURES FOR THE SAN DIEGO OPERA 2017-18 SEASON

It’s the beginning of opera season in San Diego, and opera fans are looking forward to Dr. Ron Shaheen’s illuminating lectures on the San Diego Opera (“SDO”) Season 2017-18.  For each opera in the season, Dr. Shaheen offers an in-depth look at the historic background, the composer and his music, the operatic style, story and setting, fabled performers, plus many fascinating asides on the techniques of operatic singing.  Often lighthearted and always jargon-free, Dr. Shaheen’s lectures include photographs, videos, and recordings.

The lectures will take place in two locations:

Dove Library Complex, Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad 92011.

Wed. October 11, 6:30 p.m. – Lecture on Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance

Sat. Jan. 27, 10 a.m. – Lecture on Maria de Buenos Aires, a tango opera by Astor Piazzolla

Sat. Feb. 10, 10 a.m. – Lecture on Puccini’s Turandot
