The Creative Writing Workshop in Spanish is a dynamic, participatory course designed for you to explore creative expression in different literary genres while strengthening your writing skills in Spanish. Since the course is a practical workshop, different writing techniques and exercises will be practiced in class on a daily basis. These exercises will include a stylistic analysis of selected works from Spanish and Latin American award-winning authors as you learn about imagery, dialogue, screenwriting, and more. By the end of the semester, you will have polished versions of your works in hand plus a portfolio full of creative writing ideas and prompts for the future. Prerequisite: Spanish 301 or equivalent.

Spanish 494: W, 4:00-6:40, (CRN 2710) Prof. Alejandro Meter
Sports and National Culture in Latin America. Sports play a crucial role in the process of nation formation. In Latin America, sports like football (soccer) have become a “national religion” that function as builders of national identity in their intersections with art, music, literature, and politics. In this course, we will examine various forms of cultural production such as literature, film and music, and analyze the ways in which soccer and other sports such as cycling, boxing, tennis, and rowing have been represented and have impacted both national culture and national identity throughout the region. Prerequisites: Spanish 301, 303, and 304, or equivalents.
