Arabic 294: Special Topics is a new course developed for heritage/native speakers with literacy skills in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), for whom it fulfills the core language requirement, as well as non-native students who wish to continue their studies after completion of Arabic 202 or the equivalent.
The inaugural class is titled The Arab World: Contemporary Society. Students will develop an understanding of the political, social, and religious realities of the Arabic world and the role that modernization and globalization play in shaping these realities. Some of the topics we will cover are:
- Journalism in the Arab world
- The women’s movement in Egypt
- Contemporary Arab literature
Arabic 294 will be conducted almost entirely in MSA. This class will enhance the student's reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
