Choral Scholars Trip to Russia
Sunday, February 20, 2011
The USD Department of Music Choral Scholars will perform in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the spring break. The small group of singers -- each completing a major or minor in music at USD -- will perform full concerts at the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption and at the Catholic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Both venues are major churches located on Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg's equivalent to Paris' Champs Elysees. In addition to another full choral concert given at one of the music schools of St. Petersburg, our USD students will also be hosted by the Kirov Conservatory. The Kirov Conservatory is perhaps the finest performing arts school in Russia. Students will also be provided with a tour of this historical school.
The logistics for such an undertaking are monumental. Edwin Basilio, the current director of the group, will be collaborating with Bishop Mgr. Paolo Pezzi, Hyacin the Destivelle OP, the parish priest of St. Catherine and dean of the north-west regions of the Catholic diocese.
