New Asian Studies Professors

Monday, October 4, 2010

Recently arrived on campus are three new professors who will be teaching Asian Studies related courses.

Ying Zhou, MA, joined the faculty this fall as adjunct assistant professor of Chinese and the new director of the university's Chinese language program. She comes to us from Beijing, where she earned her MA in linguistics and applied linguistics at Beijing Language and Culture University. Professor Zhou has taught all levels of Chinese at several institutions including the Columbia in Beijing Summer Program, the Harvard Beijing Academy, Tsinghua University, and the China Studies Institute of Peking University.

Jessica Patterson, PhD, who also came to the university this fall, is assistant professor of art history. She did her doctoral studies in the history of art at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Patterson combines interests in Asian languages and comparative religion with training in the history and theory of art. Her research focuses on the art and architecture of East and Southeast Asia, emphasizing the cultural collisions and intersections that characterized the nineteenth century.

Louis Komjathy, PhD, in his second year at USD, is assistant professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Komjathy is a teacher-scholar of Daoism, Chinese religions and comparative religious studies. He received his PhD from Boston University. He combines his interest in Chinese religion with an emphasis on contemplative practice and mystical experience. He also holds the position of research associate in the Institute of Religion, Science and Social Studies of Shandong University (PRC), wherein he conducts research on the history of Daoism in Shandong.

Students of Asian Studies should look for exciting new courses by all of these new professors to be eligible for inclusion as part of the Asian Studies minor and the Asian Studies track in the interdisciplinary humanities major.
