Friday, June 18, 2010

Sally Bullard Thornton (BA history '81; MA history '85) was designated the Freedoms Foundation 2010 Patriot of the Year and nominated for the national Spirit of ’76 Award. Thornton, an award-winning author and community volunteer, was instrumental in organizing the Freedoms Foundation at the Valley Forge San Diego Chapter on October 17, 1967. The initial purpose was to impart to all Americans an understanding of the commitment to our national heritage.
Said Mayor Jerry Sanders, “Mrs. Thornton’s outstanding and distinguished accomplishments and achievements are matched by her generous contributions to the San Diego community and her success in making a difference in lives proves that she is most deserving of the national Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge 2010 Spirit of ’76 Award.”

An extraordinary humanitarian, Thornton has been recognized with a variety of honors for the many service organizations that she supports.
