On May 13 Ethnic Studies faculty member Michelle Jacob received the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award at the Annual McNair Scholars End of the Year Luncheon Celebration. Joseph Maningas and Wynona Peters, both of whom are Ethnic Studies majors and McNair Scholars, presented Jacob with the award, noting Jacob’s dedication and kindness as a mentor. Upon receiving the award, Jacob thanked Maningas, Peters, and Roberta Garcia, all of whom are outstanding McNair Scholars and Jacob’s mentees. Jacob also thanked Noel Salunga, McNair Scholars program director, for his tireless efforts to support undergraduate research and the diversification of the graduate school pipeline. Under Salunga’s leadership, the USD McNair Scholars Program has undergone significant growth in size and stature.
The Ethnic Studies Department at USD is a long-time supporter of the McNair Scholars Program, as the program fits the departmental vision for promoting rigorous scholarship and faculty mentoring. USD Ethnic Studies majors consistently rank among the highest achieving scholars, giving conference presentations at regional and national conferences, receiving prestigious fellowships, job opportunities, and earning admission into graduate school programs.
