Gunner Wiebe: USD student follows father's tradition in the PGA

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Gunner Wiebe started playing golf at the age of four after watching his father, Mark Wiebe, play in the PGA Tour.  More than simply a family tradition, golf is a strong connection that he shares with his family.  After beating USD’s golf coach Tim Mickelson, younger brother of Phil Mickelson, along with 100 other golfers for a spot on the Farmers Insurance Open back in January, Wiebe immediately called his father to share the news that he would be the only amateur player in the tournament.  This was Wiebe’s first chance to play in a PGA Tour but it won’t be his last.  His family supports him and his goals of playing in the PGA Tour by helping him stay grounded and focused.  His father made it to San Diego in time for Wiebe’s practice rounds at the Open, provoking Wiebe to comment during an interview at the Open that his father always taught him “that golf always comes second to family.” (Full story)
