Chung Honored by Asian Film Festival

Leeva Chung, Ph.D., received a Service Appreciation award for her ten years of service to the San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) during their 10th anniversary celebration in October 2009.   Chung’s involvement with the SDAFF started in 1999 when she was approached by Leeann Kim, a news anchor for Channel 10 and president of the Asian American Journalist Association, to establish a local film festival.

The first annual SDAFF was held at USD in Shiley Theatre and since that time Chung, as a co-founder of the festival,  has remained very active and influential with SDAFF through fundraising, encouraging and overseeing student participation and serving on a variety of committees throughout the years to include the 10th annual Gala committee (2008-2009), the planning committee (1999-present), and serving as the education and university consultant (2007-present), juror (2005-2007), board member (2000-2005) and board chair (2003).  Now her ten years of service to the community has been recognized by SDAFF.

Recently Chung discussed the importance and value of USD students participating in the annual film festival.  “Over the years, USD students have volunteered willingly, served as interns, and are deeply moved by the content of the films and festival itself. The reason is simple. SDAFF speaks to issues of diversity, culture, history, and it brings a kind of involvement that reflects the nature of empowering and improving San Diego through arts and education.”
