Oldest Known Proto-Human Unveiled

Anthropologists are very excited about recently reported findings amassed during 17 years of research.  In “U. of California and Ethiopian Collaborators Unveil Oldest Known Proto-Human,” appearing in The Chronicle of Higher Education October 1, 2009, reporter Paul Basken gives details of the groundbreaking findings of the team of U. of California and Ethiopian collaborators who discovered the Ardipithecus skeletons in 1992 in the Middle Awash region of Ethiopia.  Nicknamed “Ardi,” this skeleton is more than a million years older than “Lucy,” the Australopithecus afarensis specimen discovered in 1974 in Ethiopia.
