The Honors Program provides students with rigorous academic challenges and opportunities. Carolyn Straub '09 (English and Ethnic Studies) took full advantage of all the opportunities during her four years at USD. As a senior, she served as the Honors Program’s newsletter editor, transforming the communication to a dynamic publication that included scholarly writing by faculty and students.

Straub also served as the president of Sigma Tao Delta, the honors society for English majors. During her tenure she revitalized the organization, creating internal writing competitions and working closely with English department faculty.

During her senior year, Straub represented USD as captain of the four member student Ethics Team at the 15th Annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition in Cincinnati. The team earned a spot in the national competition by winning the Fall 2008 regional ethics bowl.

After four years of academic and extra-curricular success, Straub was awarded the 2009 Fulbright Scholarship. This scholarship will enable her to spend a year in South Korea, teaching English while continuing research in Korean culture and how Christianity spread through South Korea. Associate Dean James Gump, who worked with Straub during her application process, was impressed by the breadth of her academic experience and success. “Carolyn excelled academically in a variety of fields, presenting at seven different academic conferences that ranged in topics from English, ethnic studies, philosophy and environmental studies. She is a true scholar who will continue to excel during her Fulbright and her future graduate school education.” Straub plans to pursue a Masters degree in American Studies.
