Ethnic Studies Receives Spirit of EAGLES Funding

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

The Ethnic Studies program has received competitive funding from the Spirit of EAGLES American Indian/Alaska Native Leadership Initiative on Cancer.

The $10,000 award is funded by the National Cancer Institute and administered by the Mayo Clinic.  Michelle Jacob, Ph.D., serves as the Project Director.  The funds support the project “Young Native Filmmakers: Cancer Education and Youth Empowerment.”  Partnering with the American Indian Recruitment Programs and the Office for Community Service Learning, the project focuses on cancer education and awareness among the San Diego-area American Indian community.  As part of program activities USD students will do a mentoring project with local American Indian youth, in which they will work collaboratively to conduct a research project and create public service announcements to help educate the American Indian community about cancer prevention and screening.
