What year did you graduate and with what Major/Minor? I graduated from USD in 2015 with a major in Marine Science. What is your hometown? My hometown is Cincinnati, OH. Where are you now and what are you doing? Currently, I live in Arcata, CA and work as a fishery observer for Alaskan Observers, Inc. What was your favorite thing about dept/usd? My favorite thing about the EOSC department at USD was how field oriented all the courses were. It's not often you stumble into a major where you get to travel to beaches, tide pools and salt marshes for field trips every week! How did your degree from Environmental and Ocean Sciences (or MARS) help prepare you for what you are doing? My degree from the EOSC department prepared me for post-graduate life by giving me a broad overview of the world of Marine Science. There are many avenues one can follow in this major whether it be marine biology, geology, ecology, etc. Personally, my Biology of Fishes course taught by Dr. Steven Searcy pushed me towards the job I currently hold! What advice do you have for current undergraduates? For the undergraduates currently enrolled at USD, I have two pieces of advice for you. First, stay on top of your assignments! The EOSC department has a rigorous course load that only gets more intensive as you move into your upper-divisions; procrastination will be your greatest vice. Lastly, befriend your professors! They are great people in and out of the classroom and will do whatever they can to help ensure you succeed.
