To Hold Police Accountable, First Stop Anti-Police Violence

Thursday, July 21, 2016

Recent shootings of police officers in Baton Rouge, LA and Dallas, TX have been met with public outcry and fear. Many Americans feel that the recent protests of police- involved shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile are causing violence against police. Social movements demanding police accountability have taken a major step backward since the police officers were killed. This is evidenced by the central theme of the Republican National Convention: “Make America Safe Again.” Donald Trump, and the Republican Party, have seized upon and redirected the fears of Americans and are once again making public safety and tough-on-crime rhetoric a major selling point to white voters who increasingly feel threatened. The deaths of police officers have shifted the conversation from police accountability to police safety. However, “Black Lives Matters” and “Brown Lives Matter” are motivated by one goal: end police violence against people of color. These movements are about nonviolence.Righteous crusades like “Black Lives Matters” and “Brown Lives Matters” must vigilantly refrain from rhetoric or acts that imply violence, especially against police. Only then can they regain control of the public safety narrative and keep law enforcement accountable for their abuses in black and brown communities. Cid Martinez, Ph.D, is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of San Diego and the author of the new book, “The Neighborhood Has Its Own Rules: Latinos and African-Americans in South Los Angeles.
