Monday, March 5, 2018

A team of five Master of Science in Real Estate (MSRE) students will represent the University of San Diego School of Business and the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate in the 2018 ARGUS University Challenge. The 2018 team is comprised of Christian Holbrook ’18 MSRE, Seth Kamphoefner ’18 MSRE, Rachel Kreamer ’18 MSRE, Derek Martin ’18 MSRE and David Neinchel ’19 MSRE. The team is led by faculty advisor Charles Tu, the Daniel F. Mulvihill Professor of Commercial Real Estate.

Dozens of prestigious universities from around the world will participate in the challenge which simulates a real-life investment analysis of a commercial real estate property, modeling the provided assumptions in ARGUS Enterprise. Students will will create a paper describing the outcome of the analysis.

The 2018 case is authored by M. Christopher Meitzen, principal of Meitzen LLC Commercial Real Estate Valuation. This year's case will be based on the city ARGUS calls home – Houston. It will be a 5-10 page, property level sale and investment analysis, using three scenarios to project the risk/return on each scenario. Teams are presented with a fictitious retail property, the Bayou City Shoppes. Just as the owner, Mr. Rane, is getting ready to sell this property, an on-site water main ruptured and caused considerable damage. It will be up to the university teams to help Mr. Rane choose one of the three scenarios that will leave him with the most cash in his pocket at closing.

University of San Diego MSRE students will have the opportunity to integrate their knowledge and skills from the classroom, along with strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, while showcasing their proficiency in ARGUS modeling. Five judges will review the cases and determine the winners. Cash prizes are given to the top four teams.

In previous years that the competition has taken place, the USD real estate teams have taken first place on six occasions and second place on two occasions.

Visit the ARGUS website for more information on the University Challenge and stay tuned for the results in April.
