USD Takes Second Place in the 2016 Real Confidence™ University Challenge

Monday, July 31, 2017

On July 31, Altus Group, NAREIT and NCREIF announced the winners of the Real Confidence™ University Challenge (RCUC). RCUC is an investment competition comprised of more than 200 students from 32 universities and colleges in North America competing to produce the top performing portfolio for the year. Students gain hands-on experience in public and private commercial real estate investing and have the opportunity to win up to $50,000 for their institution.

Each university team is allocated one billion dollars in theoretical capital among a variety of commercial real estate investment opportunities within the public and private equity and the public and private debt sectors. The performance of each sector’s weighted investment selection is calculated with its respective benchmark return data provided by NAREIT®, NCREIF®, Markit® and Giliberto-Levy Commercial Mortgage Performance Index℠.

The University of San Diego took second place in this real estate competition with total portfolio returns of 18.84 percent. The USD team had the best private market portfolio. The University of Chicago was the overall winner with 23.64 percent returns. The 2016 University Challenge index was projected at only 5.20 percent, so the teams did remarkably well.

“The Real Confidence University Challenge helps students understand the benefits that REITs and other real estate bring to investment portfolios, in terms of increasing returns and reducing risk,” says NAREIT President and CEO Steven A. Wechsler in a press release issued about the competition. “The students who participate in this annual competition gain hands-on investment experience that provides a valuable supplement to their classroom knowledge.”
