National Awards Counseling

I am the fellowship counselor in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. My primary duty is to help counsel students on those prestigious fellowships that require institutional endorsement - that is, require nomination by the University of San Diego, although I would be happy to assist students with other prestigious fellowships and awards. Here is a list of the things that I can help you with:

1. Fellowship selection, based on conversations with students about their post-graduate plans and their career goals.
2. Fellowship preparation, explaining the application process.
3. Advice on the application itself: helping with the personal statement, the resume, or the project proposal.
4. All the details associated with the preparation of the application from photos to Xeroxing to Fed Ex mailings.
5. Helping students ask for strong letters of recommendation.
6. Holding mock interviews for those fellowships that require an interview.

It is never too early to come in and speak with me! Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to set up an appointment and develop a strategy for their college years. These highly competitive awards require careful planning well in advance of the application deadline. Personal statements and research proposals take time to develop. Hastily written or partially thought out statements can really jeopardize your application. Similarly, when asking for letters of recommendation, you must give your writers enough TIME before the deadline to compose strong letters of support.
