About Dr. King
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929.
Before his assassination on April 4, 1968, Dr. King had become “one of world’s most visible advocates of nonviolence and direct action as methods of social change.”
In recognition of his dedication and service to help create an America free of discrimination that respects the dignity of every individual, President Ronald Reagan signed into law a national holiday honoring Dr. King in 1983. The first observance of the King Holiday occurred in 1986.
