Marine Science Graduate Program

Admissions

To qualify for admission to the M.S. program in Marine Science, the applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.  Applicants should have acquired competence in a field of science related to their intended course of study, either through an undergraduate science major or through the completion of appropriate coursework.  Minimum requirements for admission to the Marine Science M.S. program include:

  1. One semester of biology with laboratory
  2. One year of chemistry with laboratory
  3. One year of physics with laboratory
  4. One semester of calculus

One course in geology also is recommended.  Applicants should have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores that reflect the potential for success in graduate studies.  To be considered for admission to the Marine Science graduate program, the GRE general test is required and a subject test in an appropriate science field is recommended.

Applicants should submit a full application, including a statement of purpose that addresses the student’s specific research interests and is compatible with the expertise of the Marine Science core and adjunct faculty.  Information about those areas of expertise can be found on the graduate faculty page.  The application also should include three letters of recommendation from science professors.  Additional recommendations may be submitted but will not replace the need to have at least three letters from science professors.
