Faculty Toolkit
The LRC librarians have compiled a select resource list to assist faculty in their teaching and scholarship. Click here to access the toolkit.
Course Reserves
Professors may put materials on course reserve at the LRC for their classes. To do so, contact the Circulation Desk at x4542. Items will be ready for student use within 24 hours.
Past Exams
The Legal Research Center provides past law school exam files for the law school students in both print and electronic form. If you would like sample exams for your classes loaded onto the web, contact Owen Smith in the LRC at x4759 or osmith@sandiego.edu. To place print copies of your exams on reserve, contact the Circulation Desk at x4542. The hard copy exam files are kept behind the circulation desk, and the electronic copies can be accessed by clicking here. Students will be asked to enter their university email addresses to verify that they are authorized to access the exams.
CALI
Refer your students to CALI exercises to increase knowledge of an area of legal study performed over the Internet or downloaded and performed on a computer. Students will be asked to supply their USD e-mail log-in and password. The exercises can be accessed off of the LRC's Legal Research Databases page by clicking here, or students can pick up the CALI CD at the Reference Desk.
AudioCaseFiles
AudioCaseFiles is a database of audio recordings of cases students can download. Students will be asked to supply their USD e-mail log-in and password to register.
Course Guides
LRC librarians have prepared brief guides for USD law school elective courses that list the best LRC print and online resources students can use to start their research. At the beginning of each semester, you will be sent a batch of print guides to pass out to your students. Contact Judith Lihosit at x4752 or at jlihosit@sandiego.edu if you need more paper copies to hand out or if you do not receive any. They can also be accessed from the LRC website by clicking here.
LEXIS / Westlaw
LEXIS and Westlaw are accessible through the Internet on your office computer. Print jobs sent to the laser printers in the LRC are delivered the next weekday. Upon request, we will set up an automatic tracking system for your LEXIS or Westlaw research issues--contact Judith Lihosit for more information at jlihosit@sandiego.edu or x4752.
Legal Research Databases
The LRC also subscribes to a number of electronic databases besides LEXIS & Westlaw that contain tax materials, treaty materials, law review articles, and other resources that can help you conduct your research. Click here to see what's available to you.
Non Legal Databases
Non-legal databases can be accessed from the Copley Library Databases page (http://marian.sandiego.edu/cp_dbsarts.htm), researchers may access a variety of general electronic resources, online periodical indexes, and some full-text databases.
For passwords and training in the use of databases, home access, and all other electronic resources questions, contact Owen Smith, Head of Electronic Services, at osmith@sandiego.edu or by calling x 4759.
Reference Services to Help With Your Research
Research Assistant Training
The LRC offers training to faculty research assistants to help them more effectively complete research projects. The trainings are tailored to the specific subject area they are researching and can cover everything from how to search LEXIS/Westlaw more effectively to how to find government information on the Internet. Contact Judith Lihosit at x4752 or at jlihosit@sandiego.edu to set up a training for your research assistant or to get more information.
Routing & Alerts
Many LRC periodicals can be regularly routed to you, and books and other materials delivered to your office upon request by contacting the Reference Desk at x4612 or lrcref@sandiego.edu.
Upon request, the LRC will route the Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) and Current Publications in Legal and Related Fields. A computer file of the CILP, including a personalized version called Smart CILP, can be sent to your office computer if you prefer the electronic version.
Our reference librarains can also set up current awareness alerts for you to help you keep abreast of developments in your area of specialty. For more information on these services, contact Judith Lihosit at x4752 or at jlihosit@sandiego.edu.
Finding materials
SALLY is USD's
online library catalog is the gateway to finding materials located within the LRC and Copley (the main university library). SALLY can be used to find not just materials in our print collection, but it also provides direct access to materials in our subscription databases, and it also links to websites. SALLY is accessible via the LRC webpage or by clicking here.
Circuit
Another two million library titles are available to USD researchers through the San Diego Circuit Library Consortium (“the Circuit”). If a title is not found on SALLY, follow the on-screen directions to repeat the search in the Circuit catalog, which combines library holdings at UCSD, SDSU, Cal State San Marcos, the San Diego County Library system, and USD. Click here to search the Circuit catalog and follow the on-screen directions to request a Circuit book. The barcode number on your USD identification card is your borrower authorization. Expect 24 hour delivery in most instances. Questions? Email or contact the Reference Desk at x4612.
ILL
The Interlibrary Loan department will help you borrow materials that are not in our collection from other libraries. If materials are not available at USD or via the Circuit, we will search national library databases to obtain your request via interlibrary loan. If you wish to ILL an item, send an email to the Reference Desk that contains as much information about the item as possible (article title, journal or book title, author, publisher, and year).
LRCPLUS
Law faculty may use LRC Plus to request books, journals and photocopies of materials in the LRC and Copley library collections. Simply fill out and submit an LRC Plus request form, by clicking here. Deliveries are usually made within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays).
Ordering
With over 520,000 volumes, the LRC collection meets most faculty needs, but we will gladly order additional materials within our collection profile. Upon request, items are ordered on a rush basis and processed for your use on the day of arrival. Contact the Reference Desk at x4612 or lrcref@sandiego.edu for more information.
