SELECTIVE DISABILITY LAW RESOURCES

The term “disability law” is relatively new, but materials about the protection of people with disabilities are not.  For example, in the 1970s there were quite a few books dealing with, e.g., the legal rights of the deaf or blind (the terms “hearing impaired” or “sight impaired” were not yet in vogue).  Although the terms we now use to describe disabilities have changed, still you will find many of these materials in SALLY under the subject heading “Handicapped.”  Other SALLY entries worth trying are “Physically Handicapped,” “Mentally Handicapped,” "Blind-Deaf,” “Deaf,” “Blind,” “Hearing Impaired” or “Aged.”  SALLY does not use the subject heading "Disability Law” — use “Capacity and Disability” instead.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, commonly referred to as the ADA, is found at Public Law 101-336 (104 Stat. 327; 48 pages long) and is codified at 42 U.S.C. sections 12101 et seq. The ADA was passed by the U.S. Senate on September 7, 1989 by a vote of 76 to 8; was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22, 1990 by a vote of 403 to 20; and was enacted into law on July 26, 1990.
