Kelly Capen Douglas joined the University of San Diego in February 2005 as the General Counsel. In that capacity, she oversees and manages all legal affairs at the University. Ms. Douglas is responsible for a wide range of legal issues that relate to the University’s activities and operations, including employment and faculty matters, student issues, policy development, intellectual property matters, contract development and review, campus safety, athletics, government regulations, and others matters pertinent to institutions of higher education.
Prior to coming to the University, Ms. Douglas was a partner in the labor and employment group at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps LLP, where she worked from 1993 through February 2005. She served as the leader of the practice group from 2001-2002. At Luce Forward, Ms. Douglas specialized in counseling employers in all types of employment related matters, and defending employers in all aspects of litigation in state court, federal court, arbitrations and before governmental agencies.
Ms. Douglas is active in the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the country’s leading bar association for lawyers who practice in the area of higher education. She has been a frequent speaker to various human resources and business groups throughout San Diego County. Ms. Douglas is a member of the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of San Diego. She also is a graduate of LEAD San Diego.
Ms. Douglas graduated with High Honors from the Duke University School of Law and was a member of the Order of the Coif. She also was chosen as the Outstanding Woman Law Graduate. She received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from Stanford University.
Jamie Cummins is the Executive Assistant to the General Counsel. Ms. Cummins joined the University of San Diego in August 2004. Before working in the Office of the General Counsel, Ms. Cummins was an administrative assistant in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Ms. Cummins received her undergraduate degree in Marketing from Portland State University.
