Kelly Capen Douglas joined the University of San Diego in February 2005 as the General Counsel. In that capacity, she oversees and manages all legal affairs at the University. Ms. Douglas is responsible for a wide range of legal issues that relate to the University’s activities and operations, including employment and faculty matters, student issues, policy development, intellectual property matters, contract development and review, campus safety, athletics, government regulations, and others matters pertinent to institutions of higher education.
Prior to coming to the University, Ms. Douglas was a partner in the labor and employment group at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps LLP, where she worked from 1993 through February 2005. She served as the leader of the practice group from 2001-2002. At Luce Forward, Ms. Douglas specialized in counseling employers in all types of employment related matters, and defending employers in all aspects of litigation in state court, federal court, arbitrations and before governmental agencies. She has been a frequent speaker to various human resources and business groups throughout San Diego County.
Since 2005, Ms. Douglas has been an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the country’s leading bar association for lawyers who practice in the area of higher education. She currently serves on NACUA’s Board of Directors and has served on various NACUA committees. She also is active in the San Diego community where she serves on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of San Diego and Imperial Counties and as a board member of Christ Church Day School. She is a graduate of LEAD San Diego, and in 2009 was recognized as one of San Diego’s Top In-House Attorneys.
Ms. Douglas graduated with High Honors from the Duke University School of Law, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and also was chosen as the Outstanding Woman Law Graduate. She received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from Stanford University.
