  • Directions From Various Airports Into London:

    Heathrow Airport, which is 15 miles West of central London, (tel. (281) 759 43 21), is the world's busiest airport.

    From Heathrow: Take the Underground (Tube - Piccadilly Line every 5 min at peak times) to central London'S Victoria Station about 45 minutes.

    Or the London Transport's Airbus (tel. 222 12 34) zips from Heathrow to central points, including hotels every 15 minutes (1 hour).

    Heathrow Express

    Heathrow Express, which you can catch from the Heathrow Airport at Terminals 1-5. It takes about 15-30 minutes to reach Paddington Station then onto Victoria Station. The costs for Express Class single is about $26 one-way and about $50 round trip; First Class single is around $42 one-way and around $84 for round trip. These tickets are valid for 1 month from the date of purchase. They also have group tickets which allows up to 4 adults to travel for the price of 2. However, please check their web site to see if this is still available. The trains run every 15 minutes starting around 5am to 11:30pm everyday, 365 days a year. They are fully air-conditioned, ergonomic seating, generous luggage space, and level platform and train doorway. There are also Customer Service Representatives on board the train to help w/luggage or information. Children 0 - 15 are free of charge with up to 4 children per accompanying adult, but there might be an increase in fares for the adults. You can book your tickets on line.

    You cannot use your Travel Cards or Rail Cards for this service. Their Customer Service Representatives are available to help you starting at 5:10am to 11:30pm. They will advise you which carriage to sit in so you are in the best position for direct access to your terminal at Heathrow. They accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diner's Club and Switch credit cards or you can buy a ticket by using cash in Pound Sterling

    To reach them at Heathrow Terminal 1 take either the elevators or escalators down to the trains after you have exited from Customs. At Terminal 2, exit Customs, go down the ramp to the ground floor and follow the subway signs to their booth. At Terminal 3, exit Customs, turn left and follow the subway signs to their booth. At Terminal 4, exit Customs, turn left and go towards the elevators and escalators to the trains, they are in the hallway before the elevators and escalators right when you enter on the right hand side. At Terminal 5 located directly underneath the building.

    At Heathrow Express, there is luggage check-in for about 20 airlines. Luggage check-in starts at 5am to 9pm but this time may vary depending on airline. Airlines scheduled to have desks at Paddington for luggage check-in, are: Air Canada, Air Liberte, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Base, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cross Air, Deustche BA, Finnair, Lauda-air, Lufthansa, Qantas, Sabena, SAS Scandanavian, Swissair, TAP Air Portugal, United Airlines, and Varig.

    Long layover in London????

    If you have a long (up to 3 hours) layover in London coming home, you might consider using one of the Lounges in either Heathrow or Gatwick airports from about $32 to $35 (£15 to £20) total for up to 3 hours. There are both smoking and non-smoking lounges available, depending on your terminal. Go to Servisair Lounges for more information and pricing.

    Taxis:

    Taxis est. cost 1-way $70. Taxis take twice as long and can cost 5 times as much or more.

    However, most US flights land at Gatwick Airport which is farther out of town than Heathrow airport (tel. 02293 53 53 53).

    From Gatwick, take the Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station (every 15min., about $38 First Class Single; First Class roundtrip(return) about $78; Express Class Single (1-Way) fare about $24; and The Express Class roundtrip (return) is about $48. Tickets may be purchased on line or at the airport when you arrive, at their desk.) They also have group tickets which allows up to 4 adults to travel for the price of 2. However, please check their web site to see if this is still available.

    National Express buses:

    From Gatwick they run from about 5:30am-11pm from Victoria Station to Gatwick and back.

    Victoria Coach Station (tube: Victoria), on Buckingham Palace Rd, is the hub of Britain's denationalized coach network. National Express coaches (tel. 730 02 02) service an extensive network which links cities big and small. Outer London areas are served by Green Line (tel. 0281 668 72 61) coaches, which leave frequently from Eccleston Bridge behind Victoria Station.

    Trains:

    There are 9 major stations: Heathrow, Charing Cross, Euston, King's Cross, Liverpool St., Paddington, St. Pancras, Victoria, and Waterloo. All these train stations are linked to the Underground.

    Travel Centres are at the above Tube mainline stations and at 12-16 Regent St. (tube: Piccadilly Circus); The Strand (tube: Charing Cross); Victoria St.; and King William St. are all open Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm.
