United States Citizens
Each country in which USD has an Institute requires that a U.S. citizen have a valid passport that expires at least 90 days after your planned departure from the country, except for Russia, which requires at least 180 days. If you do not have a passport, or need to renew your passport, apply now. While the normal processing time is 4-6 weeks and you can expedite the issuance by paying a fee, this is too important a matter to be left to the last minute. To obtain your first passport, you must appear in person at a passport acceptance facility (in San Diego, several post offices, or the Clerk of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors) with two passport photos of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license, the correct fee, and form DS-11 completed, but not signed. For further information, see Passports. Proof of your citizenship may require that you obtain a certified copy of your birth certificate, which may extend the time required to obtain your passport.
In all countries in which USD has an Institute except the Russian Federation, U.S. citizens can be admitted to the country as a tourist for up to 90 days without a visa.
U.S. citizens attending the Russia Institute should submit their documents to obtain a business double-entry visa to USD no later than April 1. After April 1, there are severe monetary penalties assessed and no guarantee that we can obtain a visa for you. Further details are set forth under Russia Visa Information.
In all countries in which USD has an Institute except the Russian Federation, European Union citizens can be admitted to the country as a tourist without a passport or a visa for up to 90 days. Please verify exactly what documents you need for entry. European Union citizens attending the Russia Institute should follow the instructions set forth under Russia Visa Information.
Citizens of the Russian Federation do not need a visa to attend our Russia Institute. They may need visas to attend our other Institutes.
Citizens of all countries other than the U.S.A. and European Union countries should presume that they will need a valid passport and a visa to attend any of our Institutes unless they receive information from the government of the country where the Institute is to be held that they do not need one or other required documents. For information, go to the website of the embassy of the country where the Institute is to be held.
Obtaining a visa is quicker and less complicated if you apply for the visa in the country that issued your passport.
