As one of the main tourist destinations during the summer months, it is important that all students secure housing in Florence early.
Housing help
USD has identified an experienced, English-speaking real estate agent to assist in finding rentals. Students are not required to use this service, but may directly contact Carla Fioravanti by email, phone or fax 011-39-055-24-03-29. She has successfully housed many students within walking distance of classes in previous years, whether they sought studios or apartments with more than one bedroom. Agents charge renters a 10% commission.
Details
Most students share a rented apartment or rent a room with a family. It is best to live within walking distance or a direct bus ride from classes. From the Duomo (cathedral) in central Florence, the school is a 15-minute uphill walk. The Oltrarno area south of the River Arno is lively and less expensive, but a very long walk with no direct bus route to classes.
Buildings in Florence date back to the 1400s. Many were once large private homes now divided into apartments. Apartments of all sizes and condition are available, including some very modern renovations, but air conditioning, internet connections, elevators and laundry facilities are not always provided. Pay careful attention to the descriptions of what is included in terms of bedding, kitchen equipment and private or shared bathroom facilities.
Italian prices are quoted in Euros and private landlords typically require a wire-transferred deposit in Euros.
