Center for Corporate & Securities Law (CCSL): A Conversation with Preet Bharara

1:00-2:15 p.m.; Manchester Conference Center Auditorium.
Preet Bharara, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and one of Time Magazine's World's 100 Most Influential People, will present to law and business students. He will discuss prosecutions under President Obama's Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, the broadest coalition of law enforcement, investigatory and regulatory agencies ever assembled to combat fraud. Career Services: Navy JAG Application Seminar

4:30-5:20 p.m.; Warren Hall Room 3C.
Listen to Lt. Jason Masterson discuss the application process for the Navy JAG Corps Summer Internship Program and ways to make yourself a competitive candidate. The application deadline is February 1, and you do not want to miss this program. As a Navy JAG Corps volunteer, you will be assigned to a legal command/staff and gain experience in traditional Navy JAG Corps practice areas such as military justice (criminal prosecution and defense) and legal assistance (providing general legal advice to sailors and their families). Contact: Career Services.

Academic Success Program: Synergy—Effective Briefing and Note-Taking

12:00-12:50 p.m. and 4:30-5:20 p.m.; Location TBA.
Learn the method to the note taking and case briefing madness. This workshop provides helpful pointers for taking excellent notes and introduces two forms of case briefing. Most importantly, it teaches how to effective coalesce notes and case briefs. Contact: Director of Academic Success Kiyana Kiel.

Career Services and Office of Development and Alumni Relations: Tactics for Public Interest Career Day and Careers in the Law

Learn how to make the most of your interviews and/or table talk at Public Interest Career Day and Careers in the Law. This interactive presentation will cover any and all of your questions about these two events. Topics include networking tips, table talk, what to bring, when to arrive, and how to respond to employment offers. Our attorney panel includes Kirstin Rizzo, '06, from the Rizzo Law Firm and Ashley Hirano, '09, from Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP. Financial Aid Office: Available Outside Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Financial Aid Office receives announcements from the legal community with scholarship opportunities. Check out the Outside Scholarships webpage for a listing of these scholarships. Example of scholarships available include: USD Alumni & Class Legacy ScholarshipsNational Italian American Foundation Scholarship, and ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship. Many of the scholarship deadlines are coming up, so apply now.

Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (VICAM): 6th Annual Michael Thorsnes International Arbitration Competition

February 16-17; Warren Hall.

USD will host nearly 20 teams from law schools across the U.S. and abroad. The tournament serves as an opportunity for these teams to hone their skills in preparation for the William C. Vis International Arbitration Moot competitions in Vienna and Hong Kong. Teams will present an oral argument on an international contract dispute. VICAM is looking for 1Ls and 2Ls to volunteer to keep time during the rounds and act as runners to help the tournament run smoothly. This is a great opportunity to get exposure to oral argument as you prepare for your Legal Writing & Research oral arguments. If you are interested in volunteering, please email the USD VICAM team with your name and preferred shift (Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning).

Financial Aid Office: FAFSA Application

Attention all non-graduating students: The FAFSA application for the 2013-14 academic year is now available. The priority filing deadline is March 2, 2013. If you plan on applying for student loans and/or work study, be sure to not miss the deadline. Mindfulness Law Student Group: Seeking Members

The practice of being engaged in and aware of the present moment has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety. This new law student group is seeking a co-leader and members to meet for guided, silent meditations and other activities. Please email Robin Fraser if you are interested in bringing the practice of mindfulness to campus or learning more about it.
