Commencement FAQ

Q: Do I need to purchase tickets for Commencement?

A: No, tickets are not required for the law school commencement ceremony.

Q: Where does my family sit during Commencement?

A: Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors of the Jenny Craig Pavilion open one hour before each ceremony. Since seating is open, please do not save seats in any way other than sitting in the seat. Special seating is available to guests who are hearing impaired or disabled. Guests who are hearing impaired may request special seating from a commencement usher. Disabled guests may request that a companion sit with them. Video screens are located on either side of the pavilion. For more information on disabled or special needs accommodations for guests, please email the Jenny Craig Pavilion Ticket Office.

Q: How do I order my cap, gown and regalia for the Commencement ceremony?

A: For the most up-to-date information, attend USD's GradFest on March 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the USD Torero Store (Loma Hall) to order your cap, gown and regalia. At GradFest, you will also be able to order commencement announcements, commencement photos, and class rings. You may also order your cap and gown online beginning March 11. The last day to order your cap and gown is April 2, 2015.  

Q: When and how will I receive my USD School of Law diploma?

A: Diplomas will be mailed directly to graduates after class rank and honors have been determined, a 2- to 4-week process. It is very important that you update your mailing address in the Office of the Registrar in order to receive your diploma in a timely manner.

Q: How do I order Commencement photos?

A: You can order commencement photos from California Candids approximately one week after the ceremony. A photographer from California Candids will take two photos of each graduate: one photo of the graduate receiving the diploma case and a second photo of the graduate exiting the stage while holding the diploma case. Guests are not permitted to approach the stage area to take photos. Graduates will receive online photo proofs with ordering instructions within a week of the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase.

Q: How do I order a DVD of the Commencement ceremonies?

A: USD will produce a commemorative DVD of the 2015 ceremonies. If you would like a copy, you can order the DVD online. DVDs should arrive by mail 6-8 weeks after commencement. If you have questions about your DVD order, please email

Q: What if my family is unable to attend Commencement?

A: The USD School of Law commencement ceremony will be webcast live on the internet and will be available for replay for 1 week after Commencement. View the live webcast.

Q: Can my parents or grandparents be involved in the Commencement ceremony?

A: Parents, grandparents, and/or siblings who are alumni of USD School of Law can participate in congratulating graduates on stage at the commencement ceremony. Those who wish to participate should contact the Office for Law Student Affairs by April 14, 2015.

Q: What is Grad Bash?

A: Sponsored by the Student Bar Association, Grad Bash is an annual graduation party that celebrates the graduating students. For ticket information, please visit the SBA Social Chair Facebook page for more information.

Q: Why is it important to complete the Office for Career and Professional Development Graduate Survey?

A: The information you provide on the graduate survey helps the Career and Professional Development office further develop employment opportunities for USD Law graduates and provides statistical information which is reported, collectively and anonymously, to the American Bar Association and to U.S. News & World Report for use in the annual law school ranking.

Q: Why is it important to complete and submit the Keep in Touch Alumni Survey?

A: The information you provide on the keep in touch alumni survey helps you stay in touch with classmates and other USD Law alumni who are currently working in all legal fields. Joining the USD Law Alumni Association is free and can help you further develop your professional network.
