Skill and hard work are important elements but is there more?
Moderated by USD School of Law Dean Kevin Cole, three of San Diego’s leading lawyers will share their secrets of success to practicing law.
John F. ‘Mickey’ McGuire specializes in representing predominantly plaintiffs in business disputes, construction defect, bad faith, major injury and mass torts cases. He obtained the largest construction defect verdict in California for a case involving a 419 unit condominium project, which resulted in one of three Outstanding Trial Lawyer awards. Mr. McGuire is President of the San Diego Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates ("ABOTA"). He has been recognized in "Best Lawyers in America" every year since 1987, "Best Lawyers in San Diego," and "Top 100 Trial Lawyers," and has received "Trial Lawyer of the Year" from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, as well as the "David E. Casey Award for Excellence in Trial Work."
Virginia C. Nelson, '79, specializes in personal injury and medical negligence cases. She is a former president of the San Diego County Bar Association, San Diego Inn of Court and the Enright American Inn of Court. Nelson is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a master in the Enright American Inn of Court, a recipient of three Outstanding Trial Lawyer Awards, listed in Best Lawyers of America, and was selected America’s Finest City Legal Professional of the Year. She has also received the Witkin Award for excellence in the teaching, practice, enactment and adjudication of the law, the Broderick Award for civility, integrity and professionalism as well as routine recognition as one of the top 75 Women Litigators in California. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, she was chosen by her peers as one of the Top 10 Southern California Super Lawyers-San Diego.
Kenneth M. Sigelman is both a licensed physician and a trial attorney. He is the founder of Kenneth M. Sigelman & Associates in San Diego, which represents plaintiffs in medical malpractice and serious personal injury cases. Dr. Sigelman is the immediate past president of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego ("CASD"), and a member of the Executive Board of the San Diego chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates ("ABOTA"). He is a two-time recipient of CASD’s Outstanding Trial Lawyer Award, and has won a number of record-breaking cases, including the largest medical malpractice case in the history of San Diego, and the largest medical malpractice jury verdict in the history of Ohio.
