USD Law Professor Miranda McGowan Joins Panel to Discuss Supreme Court Ruling on Affordable Care Act

San Diego (July 5, 2012) – University of San Diego (USD) School of Law Professor Miranda McGowan will join a panel of experts on July 26 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in downtown San Diego for a discussion about the recent United States Supreme Court ruling on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The legislation was upheld on June 28 by a narrow and mixed five-to-four vote. The decision has far-reaching implications for not only healthcare policy in the U.S., but also for the future of Constitutional law and the powers of the federal government.

Sponsred by the San Diego Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society, the event titled, "The Affordable Care Act Decision: The Future of Health Care and the Constitution," brings together three local experts on the case: USD's Professor McGowan; Mike Bardin, Senior Director of Public and Government Affairs at Scripps Health; and Susan A. Channick, Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Health Law Master Degree Program at California Western School of Law. McGowan will be on hand to discuss the court's decision and how it may affect future federal legislation. 

"The pundits got it wrong on their upholding it on commerce clause grounds," says McGowan. In a recent San Diego Union-Tribune opinion article, McGowan predicted correctly that Justice Roberts would be the swing vote.
