Padres Appoint USD School of Law Grad SVP and General Counsel

The San Diego Padres have named University of San Diego School of Law Class of 2004 graduate, Erik Greupner, senior vice president and general counsel.

“Erik is an exceptional attorney who also possesses tremendous business acumen and instincts,” said Tom Garfinkel, Padres president and chief operating officer. “He is a great addition to our executive team and we look forward to him making a positive impact on the franchise and the San Diego community.”

Greupner, 35, joins the Padres following seven years with the international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he worked as a corporate and transactional attorney. During his time at Gibson Dunn, Greupner advised senior management of public and private companies in general corporate matters. He also advised acquirers and targets in mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Greupner represented Padres Vice Chairman and CEO Jeff Moorad’s ownership group in connection with its acquisition of the club and other matters. He also advised investment managers, sponsors, seed investors, institutional investors and joint venture partners regarding the establishment and operation of private investment funds.

Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Greupner worked in sales and management roles with Goldman Sachs & Company, Scudder Weisel Capital, LLC and Life Time Fitness. Greupner was the director of intermediary distribution for Scudder Weisel Capital and a sales desk manager in Goldman Sachs’ Investment Management Division.

Greupner earned his JD magna cum laude from the University of San Diego School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif, as well as executive comments editor of the San Diego Law Review. He served as a judicial intern for the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown, U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
