Roundtable on the Rationality of Rule-Following
September 26-27, 2008
Warren Hall, University of San Diego School of Law
Friday, September 26: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 27: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Presented by the Institute for Law & Philosophy.Law consists in large part of blunt, determinate rules. But in some percentage of these rules’ applications, the people subject to these rules would do better-for themselves, perhaps, but also for society-if they were to deviate from what the rules require. (That is not because the rules are flawed, but because the rules are blunt and must be so.) In such cases, is it rational to follow the rules? Participants will address this question.
Outside Participants Include:

Gerald F. Gaus (Univ. of Arizona)
