San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA): The Affordable Care Act—What Employers, Employees and You Need to Know (and Don't)

Live Scan Fingerprinting and Passport Photos (2Ls, 3Ls, and 4Es only)

9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 2:00-5:00 p.m.; Warren Hall The Writs.
Accu-Prints will provide Live Scan fingerprints and passport photos for 2Ls, 3Ls, and 4Es. Live Scan fingerprints are required for the California State Bar Moral Character Application, and passport photos are required for the MPRE exam. Live Scan fingerprints are $19; a passport photo is $10; Live Scan fingerprints and a passport photo are $27. Cash or credit card only; no personal checks. Contact: Office for JD Student Affairs.

Pro Bono Legal Advocates (PBLA): Spring Informational Meeting

12:00-12:50 p.m.; Warren Hall Room 131.
PBLA sponsors seven legal clinics in the San Diego community: Unlawful Detainer, HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence, VITA (tax), Monarch School, Children, and HOME. Volunteer opportunities range from just one day per semester to a few hours per week. Volunteers serve the community, gain valuable experience, and make meaningful connections with local attorneys. San Diego Psych-Law Society and Office of the Public Defender: Designer Laws—Personal Tragedy Makes for Bad Policy

The San Diego Psych-Law Society, in conjunction with the Office of the Public Defender, will host Adjunct Professor Alex Landon at this month's meeting. Landon is the co-author of Parallel Universe, which describes the impact of "designer laws." Examples of these laws are Megan's Law, Jessica's Law, and Chelsea's Law. His book describes how certain headline-grabbing crimes are used by political forces to impact public policy and our criminal justice system. Students are welcome to attend. Preet Bharara, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and one of Time Magazine's World's 100 Most Influential People, will present to law and business students. He will discuss prosecutions under President Obama's Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, the broadest coalition of law enforcement, investigatory and regulatory agencies ever assembled to combat fraud. Financial Aid Office: FAFSA Application

Attention all non-graduating students: The FAFSA application for the 2013-14 academic year is now available. The priority filing deadline is March 2, 2013. If you plan on applying for student loans and/or work study, be sure to not miss the deadline. The FAFSA application is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at (619) 260-4570 or stop by Warren Hall Room 203.

Financial Aid Office: Available Outside Scholarships

Throughout the year, the Financial Aid Office receives announcements from the legal community with scholarship opportunities. Check out the Outside Scholarships webpage for a listing of these scholarships. Example of scholarships available include: USD Alumni & Class Legacy Scholarships, National Italian American Foundation Scholarship, and ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship. Many of the scholarship deadlines are coming up, so apply now.

Mindfulness Law Student Group: Seeking Members

The practice of being engaged in and aware of the present moment has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety. This new law student group is seeking a co-leader and members to meet for guided, silent meditations and other activities. Please email Robin Fraser if you are interested in bringing the practice of mindfulness to campus or learning more about it.

California Bar Foundation Scholarship Application: 2013 Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship

The California Bar Foundation is awarding an amazing scholarship for those of you embarking on a public interest legal career and taking the 2013 California Bar Exam. The Rosenthal Bar Exam Scholarship awards winners with a free BARBRI exam course, and the top winners receive an additional $2,000. The scholarship application requires a nomination by USD School of Law. Although the application is not due to the California Bar Foundation until February 6, 2013, because of the nomination requirement, you must submit your application to the Office for JD Student Affairs (either via email or in Warren Hall Room 206) by Monday, January 28, at 12:00 p.m. Only students graduating in the 2012-13 academic year and taking the California Bar Exam in 2013 for the first time are eligible. USD Legal Clinics: Openings for Spring 2013

The USD Legal Clinics still has some openings for Spring 2013. Work in our on-site law office and gain hands-on experience with real clients, while receiving academic credit. Working in the clinics is an important part of your legal training and demonstrates to potential employers that you have the experience for the job. Most hours are flexible around your schedule. Be sure to apply now. McLennon Moot Court Honors Competition: Competition Spots Still Available

The McLennon competition provides 2Ls, 3Ls, and 4Es an opportunity to develop their brief-writing and oral-advocacy skills in a competitive setting where students compete individually. The competition consists of a four-week class component taught by Professor Devitt, submission of a brief, and oral argument before professors and local attorneys at the San Diego County Courthouse. All participants are guaranteed to argue on at least four occasions. The final round is argued before a distinguished panel of federal and state judges. Students who have not participated before may receive one unit of credit (graded on the P/F scale). Contact: USD Appellate Moot Court.

Legal Research Center (LRC): Welcome Back

The library catalog now allows patrons to request LRC items from outside the LRC. We will hold the item for a specified time at the circulation desk. You can simply stop by at a convenient time to check out the requested item. You can also receive text messages about your checked out items if you login to your library account and add your phone number. The LRC will continue to highlight a student organization beginning in February.

Save the Date: Careers in the Law

February 6; 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Warren Hall Second Floor Foyer.
Attend the Office of Development and Alumni Relations' 31st Annual Careers in the Law. This is the law school's largest and most important alumni and student reception. More than 20 practice areas will be represented by accomplished USD law alumni. Hosted hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be provided. This event is FREE for students, but registration is required. Save the Date: February Bar Conference

February 15-17; Warren Hall.
All students taking the bar exam in 2013 should attend the 2013 Bar Exam Conference. Topics for the conference include: substantive review of torts, contracts, crimes and evidence, essay, multiple choice and performance test review and practice, a panel of recent bar exam takers, and strategies and tactics for successful bar preparation. A detailed schedule will be provided shortly, but we expect the conference to run on Friday evening, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Look for a registration email within the next two weeks. Contact: Office for JD Student Affairs.

San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition: Volunteers Needed

Tournament Dates: February 26, 28 and March 2.
The San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition needs law student volunteers to assist with tournament logistics. This is a great opportunity to meet local judges and attorneys, and to observe talented high school students competing in a mock trial. Volunteers will assist with courtroom management and general bailiff duties. Please contact Assistant Director for JD Advocacy Programs Haley Shumaker if you are interested.
